Our Five in Five Q&A series provides quickfire, engaging insights on topics that matter to our audience.
Each release will showcase different perspectives, give detailed focus on our partnerships and raise useful points for discussion.

In this edition, we put some of our pressing questions to the Centre of Decommissioning Australia.
Q1. How does CODA support its members and the wider industry in advancing safe, efficient, and sustainable decommissioning in Australia?
CODA works through its various channels to support the decommissioning industry, these include the development of a number of reports that helped establish the baseline of understanding on the industry, a capability index where companies can load a profile of capabilities, special interest groups to build communities of practice, webinars and podcasts as well as supporting several conferences and events.

Q2. How is CODA approaching the topic of emissions and environmental performance in decommissioning, and what role can member companies play?
Emissions during decommissioning is an area we are seeing begin to be discussed in Australia but one that we believe will become more prevalent as time passes. Finding the most efficient methods to execute each piece of work is ultimately one of the best ways to constrain emissions and that pursuit of efficiency is at the heart of all decommissioning work.
Q3. Are there efforts underway within CODA to standardise data collection and reporting (e.g., emissions, costs, environmental impacts) across decom projects in Australia?
At present we are focussed on capturing the size, shape and timing of the upcoming work, we believe that as time passes and the industry becomes effective at executing the work the next phase will be to look for emissions savings opportunities. Costs are also heavily a function of this same efficiently and while they are something we are very cognisant of, we are not currently working to capture cost data.

Q4. How are investors, regulators, and the public shaping the expectations for sustainable decommissioning in Australia, and how is CODA helping members respond?
There is a definite growing interest in decommissioning from across the landscape and sustainability is really coming to the fore. A great many of CODA’s 160 partners have a high focus on sustainability, this spans the recycling and reuse of materials, research to find new and better solutions and overall operational efficiency. At its heard decommissioning is part of the energy transition, presenting many opportunities for all involved to be part of the journey.
Q5. What benefits do you see from CODA having sustain:able as a member, and how does this collaboration add value for your members?
Having sustain:able as a partner further strengthens our network of sustainability professionals with a focus on decommissioning. sustain:able’s capabilities are incredibly complimentary to the needs of the industry as it continues its journey from simple execution to execution excellence.
