Our Five in Five Q&A series provides quickfire, engaging insights on topics that matter to our audience.
Each release will showcase different perspectives, give detailed focus on our partnerships and raise useful points for discussion.

To kick off, our partner NEMS gives us some background on their process!
Q1. Many of our clients struggle with fragmented emissions data across assets and partners. How does NEMS support data gathering and quality control?
The real challenge isn’t a lack of data - it’s chasing it across spreadsheets, PDFs, and
different formats. Having control of your own data in your own house is difficult enough, and NEMS ensures data flows automatically from your source systems - PDMS, HCA, or other emission points - all the way through to the final report with full traceability and auditability.

Equity share reporting is usually a whole other nightmare: Who do you get data from? Do you get it when you need it? And in what form - spreadsheet, PDF? Not to mention waiting on multiple partners at once. NEMS´s Data Sharing feature solves that: operators push data straight from their source systems into a sharing report, and at the push of a button equity data is ready to go. Partners with NEMS can then pull that data directly into their own reports without headaches.
For Scope 3, we apply the same principle - integrating directly with supplier systems where they exist, and offering adaptable templates for those that don’t, so all suppliers can feed data into one streamlined, auditable process.
Q2. How does the NEMS platform help simplify regulatory compliance across jurisdictions (e.g. EU ETS, UK ETS, CSRD, OPRED, etc.)?
We take a bottom-up approach. NEMS captures data at the source, which means the same input can feed multiple reporting frameworks. NEMS reporting solution lets you configure any reporting standard, so whether it’s EU ETS, UK ETS, CSRD, or OPRED - the system adapts to the output format, not the other way around. That way, data is always consistent across different reporting formats.

On top of that, NEMS is set up for direct, automated reporting to EEMS, so data flows straight from your systems to the regulator - no manual handling, no duplication. It’s compliance by design, across every jurisdiction you operate in.
Q3. What insights have you gained from your clients about the biggest bottlenecks in environmental data management today?
Spreadsheets remain the biggest bottleneck. One person can create a spreadsheet that effectively defines the workflow for the entire company. People are often afraid to touch it or make changes because one mistake could break the process. That creates fragility and slows everything down. NEMS replaces that fragility with a system designed for collaboration, traceability, and control, freeing teams to focus on analysis and action rather than firefighting.

Q4. How flexible is the NEMS platform when working with clients who are just beginning their ESG journey versus those with mature data systems?
We meet clients where they are. For beginners, NEMS comes with ready-to-use workflows, templates, and calculation methods - you can get started quickly. For mature clients, we integrate directly with internal systems, external databases, and advanced dashboards. The same platform scales with your ESG maturity, so you never outgrow it.
Q5. What makes the NEMS and sustain:able collaboration different from traditional software-vendor relationships?
It’s about accountability and domain expertise. NEMS has been working in the industry since 1987 and started as an environmental reporting consultancy ourselves, so we deeply understand the challenges clients face.
sustain:able brings expertise in scenario modelling and ESG strategy. Together, it’s two companies who truly understand the domain, working hand-in-hand - technology and consultancy - to deliver solutions that actually work in practice and create real value for clients.
