UN Goal 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation

“Ensure availability and suitable management of water and sanitation for all”

While many of us don’t give a second thought to turning on the tap for a safe glass of water or using a clean toilet that whisks our waste away, billions of people still lack access to these fundamental facilities.

According to the UN in 2020 2 billion people (26%) lack access to safe drinking water, and 3.6 billion – a staggering 46% of people – lack access to safe sanitation. 2.3 billion people are living in water-stressed countries.

The oil and gas industry often works within communities who don’t have adequate access to these resources. But E&P companies have the technical know-how and resources to make a lasting difference and advance SDG 6.

SDG 6 is close to our hearts at sustain:able because it has such positive knock-on effects for families and communities.

Apart from the obvious health and disease prevention benefits of clean water and sanitation, when children and women don’t need to spend hours each day fetching water, they have time to work and earn a living for their families or get an education which will further lift their standard of living and that of their children, which the UN estimates has a 4x economic benefit.

sustain:able works with your company to identify these opportunities and put in place the most impactful actions.
